When it comes to looks, the Wave 2 is a definite winner. Fans of its predecessor will learn that it looks a lot like its previous model, but pleasingly thicker. You may not automatically associate Toshiba with high-quality mobile phone handsets, but it appears that the Japanese technology giants have begun to release a range of smartphones in the hopes of expanding their technological conquest across the gadget spectrum.

One of their recent releases – the Toshiba TG01 – has one of the biggest touchscreens we have ever seen on a mobile phone and Toshiba claim that the handset has been optimised to run a variety of applications whilst at the same time conserving battery power, but does Toshiba deliver on these promises or is this one area where they can’t succeed?

Strangely enough one of the main things we like about the TG01 is the sheer size of the thing. The handset is a behemoth, with an amazing 4.1 inch screen dominating the front of the handset displaying an amazingly high resolution, that has the most crisp and clear clarity we have seen for a while.

When you think about it, Toshiba’s main area of excellence is in television manufacturing, so it seems on face value that the TG01 is a miniature flatscreen television. We found the graphics of the menus to be stylish and impressive-looking, and then the exterior of the phone is sleek and modern, making the TG01 big and beautiful.

When browsing the internet the TG01’s screen really comes into its own, displaying our favourite web pages is full, glorious colour. We found it really easy to read and highlight pieces of text and generally scrolling and browsing was a breeze.

There are also apps that allow you to use your phone as a satellite navigation system as you can clearly see the directions and it’s really easy to use, and as an added bonus some of the models come with this pre-installed.

The T-Mobile G1 is a promising phone with good features that could compete with today's latest. T-Mobil hasn't lost the mobilephone market yet and they also have lots of cheap T-Mobile G1 deals that might change your mind when buying the phone you hvae in mind.

Three (3) INQ Chat 3G Mobile Phone Review

The audio player is of a decent quality and is capable of supporting a range of filetypes. The built-in HSDPA modem provides you with the ability to plug your handset into your laptop or PC, so you can have wireless broadband access wherever you are, perfect for students.

We found the screen to be an average 2.4inches, which is fine but we prefer a bit of a larger screen nowadays. The quality is alright and offers plenty of space for Web browsing and reading text. We found that the auto-focus camera was again only passable at 3.2 megapixels, which is acceptable for a phone of this price, but the quality of the resulting images are only really suitable for online use. We did find that the apps and games available on the phone were good and the wireless capabilities were great.

Unfortunately for the Three network we’re not a school student so we found the supposed funky, colour menus to appear as a horrible, acid-trip like mess and the whimsical little sounds whenever we did anything did nothing more than irritate us to the point where we felt like the only way to make them stop would be to destroy the phone.

Loading the various social networking features and apps on the Chat 3G were for the most part slow and sluggish, and unfortunately we found that Web browsing was pretty much the same. With such a low resolution, the screen does Web pages no justice and the buggy features on the phone meant that our browsing experience would freeze on regular occasions.

And of course there is no 3.5mm headphone jack, so the rubbish headphones in the box are what you’re stuck with. We have no idea why manufacturers continue to do this. In conclusion we found that the price of the Three INQ Chat 3G is enough to overcome the problems of the phone, however on the other hand we believe that the Chat is suitable only for students of 15 to 20 years.

Once you get a bit more money in your pocket and want something more high-tech you will definitely want to upgrade to something that boasts a few more features and a better handset experience. In addition, those who are concerned over the over-use of social networks may find this phone does little more than enable this addiction.

The media player gives great clarity when watching movies and videos and it is capable of supporting a wide variety of music and video file-types. The sound quality is great and the inclusion of a 3.5mm headphone jack is fantastic, as it allows us to use our own headphones. Having said that, we must confess that the headphones Samsung includes in the box are of great quality as well. You get an impressive 2GB memory for all of your media, but you are able to expand this via the use of a microSD card.

In addition, the Jet supports a range of great connectivity options including GPRS, 3G, HSDPA, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB and GPA. We weren’t very happy with the resistive nature of the screen, especially as the current trend in smartphones indicates that capacitive screen’s are the best on the smartphone market as you don’t need to use much pressure to make a command.

Due to this when you use the Jet you feel as though you are pushing the screen incredibly hard when swiping and clicking, which isn’t what you want in a quick phone as it does nothing more than slow you down. The battery life is quite poor and we found that we had to recharge the phone on an incredibly regular basis, although this is a common complaint in smartphone releases.

Without Android the app selection is pretty poor and we long for the games the Android Marketplace offers. To conclude we found that the Samsung Jet is a great phone for it’s price and boasts some great features, especially the camera, which is a real joy to use. The internal and external memory ensures you have plenty of space to enjoy the media player and the phone has an overall stylish appearance.

Unfortunately the touchscreen is the major drawback of the Jet and we can’t help but feel that the phone would be far superior if it came with a capacitive touchscreen. Overall it’s a great phone but there are plenty of others that offer you a better Android experience.

We love the Samsung Galaxy range and always feel excited when they announce a new model, so we were almost beside ourselves to learn that their latest is a budget handset that supposedly offers all of the luxury of a mid-range smartphone. But following our disappointment after the release of the Galaxy Mini we were a bit apprehensive about giving our heart to the Fit, but does it redeem the Samsung Galaxy name?

It appears that the Samsung Galaxy Fit was created as a mid-range to budget smartphone that can take the regular phone user from a standard phone to a smartphone with minimum confusion and if we’re honest, it seems to work! We found that the overall appearance of the phone is quite stylish and is very well-designed. The size makes it a comfortable feeling in the hand and the quality of the handset overall was good, so you don’t feel as though it’s going to break whenever you use it.

The screen is a great 3.31 inches, which isn’t the biggest or best we’ve come across but it fits the bill and is quite impressive for a mid-range handset. We found that the screen is really quite clear and crisp so browsing the Web and navigating menus is really effortless and quite enjoyable. After the disappointing 3.2 megapixel camera on the Apollo we were pleased to see that the Fit offers a 5 megapixel camera that is incredibly quick in use.

There are a number of modes to get the best shot, including macro and portrait settings, and with smile detection on-board you can get some great pictures of your friends and family. We weren’t as keen on the fact that there was no physical shutter release button, but we’re pretty much used to using an on-screen control now.

We’ve been avid fans of Nokia since they introduced their first mobile phone handsets in the nineties and as a result they stand as one of our favourite mobile phone manufacturers of all time. Admittedly a large part of this was the hours we whiled away on ‘Snake’, but since those happy days Nokia have gone from strength to strength and have developed a large range of ultra high-tech smartphones.

Due to the huge range of manufacturers vying for the top spot on the mobile phone market, Nokia have had to pull out all of the stops to create phones tailor-made for the specific user and as a result they have created their latest business phone release, the Nokia E5.

Standing as a rival to the BlackBerry, the E5 takes care of all of the needs of the modern business user. Aesthetically speaking it’s not very dissimilar to it’s predecessor, however when in the hand you will notice that it feels different.

There is a full QWERTY keyboard that feels lovely to use, featuring soft rounded keys that are well spaced and gentle on the fingertips, making it a much quieter handset to use than the BlackBerry Bold series. As the Nokia E5 is for the most part a business phone, it’s biggest rival is the BlackBerry and due to this Nokia have pulled out all of the stops.

The e-mail client is easy to set up, easy to use and provides an excellent service. Sending and receiving messages is quick and simple and documents are fine to view. Those who use the Gmail or Hotmail clients will simply need to enter their e-mail address and password as opposed to POP3 addresses and the like, making it one of the easiest e-mail clients we have used.

HTC HD2 Mobile Phone Review

Since smartphone technology entered into the mainstream we have seen a number of manufacturers developing their own handsets to fight off their rivals; but there have always been two main contenders fighting it out at the forefront of innovative features and surprisingly high price tags – HTC and Apple.

The latest release from HTC, known as the HD2, is a Windows operated handset that is set to open up the next round of the tech wars, but have HTC done enough to fight off the iPhone 4? You’ll see there’s a lot to love when you first use the HTC HD2, namely the incredible processor that provides you with one of the most responsive touchscreens we’ve known.

In fact this responsiveness, combined with the amazing HTC virtual keyboard and the brilliant predictive text features, means you are able to send a message in a fraction of a minute, which is pretty impressive stuff. Aesthetically the 4.3 inch HD display provides you with stunning video playback and beautifully smooth Web surfing, not to mention how great your images look.

In terms of operations, the HD2 is running the Windows 6.5 OS, making it up-to-date with the latest technology. This Windows technology is combined with HTC’s own Sense system which is both eye-catchingly good looking and really comfortable to use. Sense packs in loads of cool little extras that immediately feel like you’ve upped your tech-savvy system, such as the windscreen wipers feature that lets you know if it’s raining outside.

The main homescreen looks great and is really simple to configure, meaning you can put shortcuts to applications on it really quickly, which also enables you to turn your phone into a wireless hotspot for linking with your desktop or laptop PC. The camera is 5 megapixels, which is pretty straightforward for a phone of this price. It is fully equipped with LED flash and settings to improve your images right on the phone, which you can then upload straight to the Web.

HP Pre 3 Mobile Phone Review

The Pre 3 runs on an amazing 1.4GHz Qualcomm processor, which, although it is only single-core, it is supported by 512MB of RAM and 8-16GB of storage and dual-band 802.11n. In terms of connectivity, the Pre 3 features some excellent options, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, AGPS and HP’s patented Touchstone wireless charging system.

The Pre 3 comes with a lot more than complicated tech hardware, including a 5 megapixel camera. Though it is a straightforward pixel count, it is pretty decent, coming complete with an LED flash and the capability of shooting 720p video. You also get a front facing 1.3 megapixel camera, which provides you with the ability of video calling and checking your face on the move if you’re without a mirror.

HPs Touchstone system provides you with the ability to transfer data from the HP TouchPad to your Pre 3, so if you own both devices you are able to answer calls and view text messages on the TouchPad through the use of Wi-Fi. You are also able to synchronise websites, contacts and media between the two devices via the Touch to Share function, which although it is awesome categorically, if you don’t own an HP TouchPad you won’t be overly impressed.

The HP Pre 3 features some other nifty little features including the Just Type app, a quick access box that provides you with the ability to type anything you want then decide what you want to do with the text once you are done. This helps if you want to make a note or draft up a text message whilst on the go.

To conclude the HP Pre 3 is an incredibly improvement on its predecessors, but there are still problems that need to be improved upon if HP hope to rival the high-end smartphones. As a mid-range phone it is definitely worth consideration and if you have an HP Touch Pad we’d go as far as to say you should definitely purchase it, but if you want a better selection of apps you may prefer to look elsewhere until HP have made their improvements.
